Mrs. S and I have been conferencing to see where the students need to go next with their letter and sound identification. We are introducing new play activities that will help reinforce and consolidate the student's letter ID skills and extend these skills to sounding out short words. We encourage you to read with or to your child for 10 minutes each day. Pointing out environmental print and asking what sound does that letter "say" is also a great way to support your child's discoveries. (Environmental print is things like: letters on cereal boxes, signs on the street, aisle labels at the store etc.)
We have been exploring shapes and making connections to line and value in Art. We are working on small guided practice groupings for students ready to explore reading readiness skills. As we explore shapes we will be looking at structures and movement. Can the 3D shapes slide, stack, roll. This will connect to sorting which we explore is small guided practice groups last term. We continue with concepts of one to one correspondence with all activities. A new initiative to get students excited about reading is our "Morning Message". We have students read familiar words (the message has the same pattern each day) and point out words as they read. The message also helps the students understand the schedule for the day.
